What's the deal?

Prepaid cards are becoming an increasingly popular means of spending overseas and for good reason, they can provide a more secure, convenient and economical means of carrying foreign cash when you're abroad.

Caxton FX have designed their cards specifically for use overseas and as such have cut out many of the expensive fees that other prepaid card providers levy for this privilege.

They offer three different cards, the Eurocard (suitable for use within the Eurozone), the Dollarcard (suitable for use in the USA) and the Global Traveller card (suitable for spending anywhere else in the world) and when you apply you have the option to choose one, two or all three depending on where you plan to travel.

What makes it great?

Caxton FX prepaid cards don't charge an application or monthly 'maintenance' fee, there's no charge for transactions (so it's ideal for spending in shops and restaurants) and topping-up your card online is fee-free too.

They can be used to make purchases anywhere the Mastercard symbol is displayed and charge no commission when you spend or load your card overseas.

What's more, they guarantee that they'll give you the best exchange rate available so you can be confident that you'll get a good deal on changing your money too.

Who would it suit?

The Caxton FX prepaid card is most suited to individuals who are looking for a value-for-money alternative to credit and debit card spending overseas.

What's the catch?

A minimum top-up does apply on each card - £100 for the Global Traveller card, $200 for the Dollarcard and €150 for the Eurocard and ATM withdrawals will be subject to a fee (£1.50, $3 and €2 respectively) so this is something to factor in when considering its suitability.

It's worth bearing in mind that you will be unable to use the Caxton FX cards to make security deposits (such as those required for car hires and hotel reservations) either in the UK or overseas.  In this instance you will need to use another card to secure your booking, although you will be able to settle the balance using your Caxton FX card.

You will need to make sure that you always choose to pay in the currency your Caxton FX card has been loaded with.  Sometimes overseas retailers will offer you the option to pay in sterling instead of the local currency of the country you're staying in.  However, this is known as Dynamic Currency Conversion and will actually be a more expensive option as the retailer will convert the payment at their own exchange rate.

Similarly, while the Caxton FX cards can be used to make purchases in the UK (anywhere Mastercard is accepted), this is likely to make your purchase significantly more expensive as it will involve another foreign exchange transaction at the Mastercard (rather than Caxton FX) exchange rate.  For this reason it's always best to use the card to spend in the denominated country alone.

What's the alternative?

The ICE Travellers Cashcards (they also have Euro and Dollar varieties) are another prepaid option that are low on fees.

As with the Caxton FX prepaid cards they also offer fee free transactions, free Euro and Dollar top-ups and charge no annual or monthly maintenance fees.  However, they aren't backed by the exchange rate guarantee that comes with the Caxton FX prepaid cards, making them a slightly less attractive (and potentially a more expensive) option for spending overseas.
