What's the deal?
Having recently been voted the number 1 UK brand for services, there’s now even more reason to consider using the RAC for breakdown cover: free recovery worth £34.
All you need to do is select the Roadside and At Home Cover option and your free recovery will be automatically added to your cover choice.
RAC’s UK breakdown cover starts from as little as £45 for single vehicle cover. You will also qualify for a discount starting from £17 when you order you breakdown cover online.
What makes it great?
Roadside cover means that the RAC will attempt fix your vehicle at the roadside, as long as you are more than a quarter of a mile away from your home address. If they can’t fix it then they will tow it to an RAC approved garage within 10 miles of where you breakdown.
Selecting the Home Cover option will mean that you are also covered if you car breaks down or won’t start within a quarter of a mile of your house.
Free recovery means that in the event that you can’t complete your journey, the RAC will take your vehicle and up to seven passengers to your home or a single address anywhere within the UK. They will also provide transport in the event that you are taken ill and cannot continue your journey due to having no passengers who can drive your vehicle.
Who would it suit?
The RAC claim that they successfully fix 4 out of every 5 cars at the roadside and that they will reach you within 40 minutes of calling them out. Free recovery will give you the peace of mind that you and your family will still be able to complete your journey or, at the very least, get back home safely in the event that the RAC is unable to fix your car.
The home cover option is also good idea for commuters or those who live in rural areas where it is unlikely that public transport will be able to get you to work on a cold, frosty morning.
What's the catch?
Breakdown Cover is essentially an insurance policy that will pay off if your car breaks down. Whereas Roadside and At Home cover are both worth taking out if you really need them, the free recovery that you get in doing so will only benefit you if the RAC are unable to fix your car at the roadside.
What's the alternative?
There are of course other providers who can also offer you breakdown cover such as the AA and Green Flag. All of these providers (including the RAC) use what is called an automatic service whereby you pay an annual fee and they dispatch their own vehicles to repair or restart your vehicle.
An alternative to this type of service are the so-called ‘pay & claim’ providers. How these work is that your provider does not have a fleet of vehicles, but will call on the services of a local recovery firm to come and assist you in the event of your car breaking down.
You have to pay for the call out or any repairs to your vehicle and then claim back the cost from your provider afterwards. However, the real benefit of ‘pay & claim’ providers is that their fees are considerably lower than the likes of RAC or the AA.
A ‘pay & claim’ breakdown cover policy would suit you if your car is newer, has a good reputation for reliability and you can afford to pay up front for any repairs. If your car is older and prone to breaking down then you would probably be better off going with an automatic provider like the RAC.
